Should Insulation Kraft Paper Face In or Out?
Kraft-faced insulation should always face the warm side of the living space — this means the interior side of the wall or ceiling in cold and mixed climates.
Rule of Thumb:
- In heating-dominant regions, kraft paper should face inward (toward the heated room).
- In cooling-only climates (like Florida or Southeast Asia), kraft facing might not be needed or should follow local vapor barrier standards.
Why Does Direction Matter for Kraft-Faced Insulation?
The kraft paper layer acts as a vapor retarder, helping to control moisture from warm indoor air.
If it’s installed incorrectly:
- ❌ Moisture can get trapped inside wall cavities
- ❌ Mold and wood rot may develop
- ❌ Insulation performance is compromised
📌 Facing the wrong direction is one of the most common vapor barrier mistakes.
When to Use Kraft Paper Facing Inward
Use kraft-faced insulation with paper facing inward when:
- You’re insulating exterior walls in cold or mixed climates
- You’re working in bathrooms, kitchens, or laundry rooms
- There is no separate vapor barrier on the exterior side
When Not to Use Kraft-Faced Insulation
Avoid kraft paper when:
- There’s already a foil vapor barrier installed
- You’re insulating interior soundproofing walls
- You’re in hot, humid climates that need walls to breathe
In these cases, unfaced insulation or breathable materials are better.
Quick Installation Tip
Face the kraft paper toward the space you want to keep warm and dry. Then cover it with drywall or a fire-rated barrier — kraft paper is flammable and should never be left exposed.
Kraft-Faced vs Unfaced: Quick Comparison
| Feature | Kraft-Faced Insulation | Unfaced Insulation |
|---|---|---|
| Vapor Retarder | ✅ Yes (built-in) | ❌ No |
| Fire Rating | 🔥 Needs drywall cover | ✅ Safe in cavities |
| Install Direction | Must face interior | Flexible |
| Typical Application | New walls, ceilings | Retrofits, soundproofing |
