AMA Insulation paper

AHA Composite Paper is a flexible three-layer insulation material comprising aramid paper layers laminated on both sides of a polyimide film. It offers excellent heat resistance, mechanical strength, and electrical insulation, ideal for H-class motors and transformers up to 180°C.

Description

Product Description

The structure of AMA paper places a polyester film core between two layers of aramid paper, bonded with specialized adhesive. This design takes advantage of the polyester film’s dielectric strength and the aramid paper’s mechanical toughness. The result is an insulation material that resists tearing, maintains flexibility during installation, and provides stable electrical properties.

AMA paper serves as a practical alternative to NMN insulation paper, offering comparable performance characteristics for applications that don’t require the higher temperature ratings of Class H materials. It’s UL certified (E310670), RoHS compliant, and meets REACH standards, making it suitable for both domestic and international markets.

The paper works well in automated manufacturing processes. Its smooth surface and consistent thickness allow it to feed cleanly through coil winding equipment and slot insertion machines without jamming or tearing.

Frequently Asked Questions

General Product Questions

What is AMA insulation paper? AMA is a three-layer composite insulation material made from polyester film sandwiched between two layers of aramid paper. It’s designed for electrical insulation in motors, transformers, and other electrical equipment operating at temperatures up to 155°C.

What does “Class F” mean? Class F refers to the thermal classification according to IEC standards. It means the material can operate continuously at temperatures up to 155°C without degrading. This rating makes it suitable for most industrial motors and transformers that generate moderate heat during operation.

What’s the difference between AMA and AHA paper? The main difference is temperature rating. AMA uses polyester film and is rated for Class F (155°C), while AHA uses polyimide film and is rated for Class H (180°C). If your application runs below 155°C, AMA provides similar mechanical and electrical performance at a lower cost. For higher temperature requirements, AHA is the better choice.

How does AMA compare to NMN insulation paper? AMA offers similar thermal and electrical characteristics to NMN but at a more economical price. The polyester-aramid combination provides comparable dielectric strength and mechanical properties for most Class F applications. The performance is equivalent for standard motor and transformer insulation uses.

Certifications and Standards

Is AMA paper certified? Yes. It carries UL certification (E310670) and complies with RoHS and REACH standards. This makes it suitable for equipment sold in markets with strict environmental and safety requirements.

Does it contain hazardous substances? No. AMA paper is RoHS compliant, meaning it’s free from restricted hazardous substances like lead, mercury, cadmium, and certain brominated flame retardants. It also meets REACH requirements for chemical safety.

What testing standards does it meet? The material is tested according to international standards for dielectric strength, thermal endurance, and mechanical properties. The UL certification confirms it meets safety requirements for electrical insulation applications.

Technical Performance

What’s the breakdown voltage? It depends on thickness. The 0.5mm version provides at least 25KV breakdown voltage, while the 1.10mm version provides at least 30KV. This high dielectric strength ensures reliable insulation even in demanding electrical environments.

Will the adhesive hold up under heat? The adhesive is tested at 180°C for 10 minutes with no layering, foaming, or glue flow. Since the paper is rated for 155°C continuous operation, this provides a safety margin. Normal adhesion testing confirms the layers stay bonded under standard conditions.

Is it suitable for high-frequency applications? Yes. The polyester film core provides low dielectric loss, making AMA suitable for motors and equipment operating at higher frequencies. The stable electrical properties don’t degrade significantly across frequency ranges typical in industrial equipment.

How flexible is the material? AMA paper is quite flexible and can conform to curved surfaces without cracking. This makes it easy to install in motor slots and around transformer coils. However, it’s not elastic—once bent, it maintains its shape.

Does it absorb moisture? Polyester film has very low moisture absorption, and the aramid paper layers are treated to minimize moisture uptake. However, for best performance, store the material in a dry environment and avoid prolonged exposure to high humidity.

Customization and Ordering

Can I order custom sizes? Absolutely. While we produce standard thicknesses from 0.12mm to 0.5mm and widths up to 980mm for regular orders, we can customize dimensions to match your specifications. Contact us with your requirements and we’ll confirm what’s feasible.

What thicknesses are available? Standard options include 0.12mm, 0.15mm, 0.18mm, 0.23mm, 0.25mm, 0.30mm, and 0.50mm. We can also produce custom thicknesses within the 0.12-0.5mm range depending on your application requirements.

What’s the minimum order quantity? Minimum order quantities vary depending on thickness and width specifications. Contact our sales team for specific MOQ information based on your requirements.

Can you cut it to specific shapes? We primarily supply rolls and sheets, but we can cut strips to specific widths. For more complex shapes, you can cut the material yourself—it’s easy to work with using standard cutting tools. Some customers use die-cutting for high-volume production of specific shapes.

What’s the lead time for custom orders? Standard sizes are typically in stock for immediate shipment. Custom thickness or width specifications may require 2-4 weeks production time, depending on order volume and our production schedule.

Installation and Usage

How do I cut AMA paper? You can use scissors, rotary cutters, or die-cutting equipment. The material cuts cleanly without excessive fraying. For production environments, automated cutting machines work well with proper blade maintenance.

Can it be used in automated winding equipment? Yes. AMA paper is designed to work with coil winding machines and slot insertion equipment. Its smooth surface and consistent thickness prevent jams and tears during automated processing.

What direction should I orient the material? Material properties vary slightly between longitudinal and transverse directions. For applications where directional stress matters (like motor slot insulation), test both orientations to determine which provides better performance for your specific use case.

Do I need special adhesives to install it? The paper itself already has adhesive bonding the layers together. For attaching it to motor components or other surfaces, use adhesives compatible with the temperature rating—typically polyester or silicone-based adhesives rated for at least 155°C.

Storage and Handling

How should I store it? Keep it in a dry location below 40°C, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. The shelf life is 12 months when stored properly. Avoid humid environments that could affect the adhesive or paper layers.

What happens if it gets wet? While the polyester film resists moisture, prolonged exposure to water can affect the aramid paper layers and potentially weaken the adhesive bond. If the material gets wet, dry it thoroughly in a well-ventilated area before use. For critical applications, test the dielectric strength after drying.

Can it be stored outdoors? No. Outdoor storage exposes the material to UV radiation, temperature fluctuations, and humidity, all of which can degrade its properties. Always store indoors in a controlled environment.

Does it have an expiration date? The recommended shelf life is 12 months from the manufacturing date when stored under proper conditions. After this period, the adhesive may begin to degrade. However, material stored beyond 12 months can often still be used—we recommend testing a sample for adhesion and dielectric properties before use in critical applications.

Troubleshooting

The paper is delaminating. What’s wrong? Delamination usually occurs due to: (1) Exposure to temperatures exceeding the rated limit, (2) Moisture contamination during storage, (3) Mechanical stress beyond the material’s limits, or (4) Material stored beyond its shelf life. Check your application temperature and storage conditions.

It’s difficult to insert into motor slots. Why? This could be due to: (1) Selecting thickness too large for the slot dimensions, (2) Surface contamination making it sticky, or (3) Incorrect material orientation. Try a thinner gauge, ensure clean handling, and test both longitudinal and transverse orientations.

The edges are fraying during cutting. How can I prevent this? Use sharp cutting tools and replace blades regularly. For production cutting, ensure cutting dies are properly maintained. Some fraying is normal with aramid paper, but excessive fraying indicates dull cutting tools.

Safety and Environmental

Is it safe to handle? Yes. AMA paper doesn’t contain hazardous substances and is safe for normal handling. Standard workshop safety practices apply—avoid breathing dust if cutting produces particles, and wash hands after handling.

Can it be recycled? As a composite material with multiple layers and adhesive, it’s not easily recyclable through standard paper recycling streams. Check with local industrial waste facilities for proper disposal options in your area.

Does it produce toxic fumes when heated? Under normal operating temperatures (up to 155°C), AMA paper does not produce harmful fumes. If exposed to excessive temperatures or fire, like most organic materials, it will produce smoke. Ensure adequate ventilation in work areas and follow local safety regulations.
