Description
What is Mica Paper?
Mica paper is an engineered mineral-based substrate created by depositing tiny mica flakes in a uniform, continuous sheet formation using a papermaking process. Unlike conventional paper, SIDA mica paper contains no cellulose or organic binders in its base form—only trace amounts of bonding agent (typically <2% for structure retention). This unique composition provides inherent thermal resistance and electrical insulation properties that synthetic materials cannot match.
The paper is subsequently impregnated with silicone, epoxy, or other high-temperature resins to create mica tapes, laminates, and molded insulations used throughout the electrical industry.
Manufacturing Process
SIDA produces mica paper through an advanced water-laid papermaking system:
-
Mica Exfoliation: Premium mica ore is delaminated into micro-thin flakes (<0.05mm thickness)
-
Pulping & Dispersion: Flakes are uniformly dispersed in water slurry without chemical additives
-
Continuous Formation: Slurry passes through a wire mesh to form a continuous sheet
-
Thermal Drying: Low-temperature drying preserves mica structure and properties
-
Calendering: Precision rolling achieves uniform thickness and density
-
Slitting & Winding: Custom widths and roll diameters for customer specifications

Application Scenarios
1. Electrical Insulation Tapes
Application: Impregnated with silicone resin to create class H (180°C) or class C (200°C) mica tapes for coil and bar insulation in:
Why SIDA Mica Paper: Uniform thickness ensures consistent resin penetration; high mica content (>98%) maximizes insulation performance; synthetic grade (S506) provides fire resistance for safety-critical windings.
2. Fire-Resistant Cables
Application: Construction of fire-resistant mica tapes that maintain circuit integrity during fire (950°C for 3+ hours per IEC 60331):
-
Emergency power circuits
-
Building safety systems
-
Data center power feeds
Recommended Grades: 502-1 (Calcined Muscovite) and S506 (Synthetic) for UL 2196 compliance; 507 (Low Resin) for VPI cable systems requiring resin impregnation.
3. Mica Laminates & Sheets
Application: Base material for rigid mica sheets (via hot-press resin bonding) used in:
Why SIDA: Our 505 grade with trace bonding agent provides exceptional mechanical strength for high-pressure lamination; available in 0.05–0.18mm thicknesses optimized for different laminate thickness requirements.
4. Commutator Segments & Washers
Application: Commutator mica paper (505 grade) is die-cut into insulation segments for DC motor commutators:
-
Power tools
-
Automotive starters
-
Industrial drives
Performance: High flexural strength prevents cracking during high-speed rotation; precise thickness tolerance (±0.01mm) ensures uniform segment height.
5. Industrial Furnace Insulation
Application: P506 Phlogopite paper serves as primary insulation in:
-
Induction furnace coils
-
Heat treatment equipment
-
Glass melting furnaces
Advantage: Phlogopite’s superior moisture resistance prevents insulation degradation in humid industrial environments; 850°C continuous rating matches furnace operating conditions.
6. Aerospace & Defense
Application: S506 Synthetic mica paper for ultra-high temperature insulation in:
Certification: Meets outgassing requirements of ASTM E595; provides 1000°C thermal protection in zero-oxygen environments.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q1: What is the difference between mica paper and mica laminates?
A: Mica paper is the flexible, raw substrate (0.05–0.18mm thick) containing primarily mica flakes with minimal binder. Mica laminates are rigid sheets produced by impregnating mica paper with resin (10–30% content) and hot-pressing multiple layers. Think of mica paper as the “fabric” and laminates as the “finished composite material.” We supply both products.
Q2: Which grade should I use for fire-resistant cable production?
A: For organic insulations (silicone, epoxy), use 502-1 (Calcined Muscovite) for best fire performance and cost balance. For inorganic mineral cables, S506 (Synthetic) provides the highest temperature rating. If you require VPI processing, choose 507 (Low Resin) for optimal resin penetration. All meet IEC 60331 and BS 6387 standards.
Q3: Can you supply mica paper in narrow slit widths for tape production?
A: Yes. We precision-slit rolls to widths as narrow as 4.5mm with ±0.1mm tolerance. Our slitting process uses razor-slit technology to maintain clean edges without delamination. Popular widths: 5mm, 10mm, 15mm, 20mm for mica tape manufacturers.
Q4: How does moisture affect mica paper performance?
A: All grades have <0.5% moisture content as-shipped. Muscovite (506) absorbs slightly more moisture than Phlogopite (P506) in high-humidity environments (>90% RH). For tropical climates or furnace applications, P506 or S506 are recommended. Storage in original packaging maintains performance for 12+ months.
Q5: What is the minimum order quantity (MOQ) for custom grades?
A: Standard grades (506, P506): 100 kg (≈1000m² at 0.10mm). Specialty grades (S506, 502-1): 50 kg. Custom slit widths: 20 kg per width. Trial rolls (10kg) available for R&D at prototype pricing.
Q6: Do you provide third-party test certificates?
A: Every shipment includes a Certificate of Conformance (CoC) with dielectric strength, thickness, and thermal loss test data. Additional certified testing is available: IEC 60331 fire test, UL E332023 recognition, RoHS/REACH compliance (additional fees apply).
